Tuesday after school is when Mary’s Mentors, the school’s peer tutoring program, is in session. Mary’s Mentors pairs Junior High student tutors with younger students who need a bit of help with their studies. At any given session, older students will be listening to younger ones reading aloud, coaching younger ones through a worksheet, or holding flashcard “contests” for several students at a time.
The program begins second quarter and runs through the school year. Students involved must have parental permission to participate and must understand that this is a commitment of time and effort. Service hours are granted to the tutors, and students in all grades have the opportunity to interact with one another in a mutually beneficial situation. Faculty moderators make sure that everyone is receiving adequate attention and staying on task.
