First Grade’s Lemonade Stand
First grade learned about goods and services in social studies class and money in math class, so we decided to create a lemonade stand! We designed posters to market our product, and we sold our lemonade to the entire school during lunch periods. Thank you so much to all of the parents who donated items and their time to make this a huge success!
Book of the Week
Because of Winn-Dixie
My guided reading group has been reading Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. In the story, Opal befriends Gloria Dump who teaches her about the importance of owning your own mistakes and learning from them to be a better person in the present. Gloria Dump had a “mistake tree,” which was a tree in her backyard that held bottles signifying all of the mistakes she had made in her life. We created our very own “mistake tree” in the classroom. Each child wrote down their mistakes on a paper bottle to hang. It was a time for deep reflection.
Each first grader also took their favorite character from the story and created a mind portrait. Students needed to develop possible thoughts for their character.
Words of the Week
Unit 5, Week 2 Spelling Words
Before we went on Easter vacation, our class took a pretest to determine our spelling words for this week. We will be working on the ou sound this week. Your child will come home on Monday with their identified list. They will either study words from the brown list OR the teal list. Please leave this list in your child’s Home folder on the “Right Back to School” side every day so you will have the words all week. Our test will be on Friday, April 28.
