St. Mary’s partners with Catholic Charities to help refugees starting a new life in the Chicago area. The refugees come here legally from countries such as Iraq, Burma and Sudan. Our involvement ranges from providing them with a “Welcome to America Pack” of household items ready to furnish their new apartment, to sponsoring a family with rent support and other services. For Parish Action Day, we hosted a baby shower for new mothers, contributing baby and toddler clothing and other items, and providing an opportunity to share food and beloved traditions from different cultures.
Opportunities for involvement include donating items for a new refugee family, and participating in a dedicated refugee support committee. For additional information, please email Kate Nessinger at Refugees@stmaryriverside.
Here is a sample list of items included in a Welcome to America Pack.

We are guided by these core values:
Thank you to St. Mary’s Parish for your generosity in putting together a Welcome to America Pack to welcome a newly arrived refugee family from Bhutan! The Pradhan family is adjusting to life in the United States rapidly. They are enrolled in English classes, our job readiness program, and learning about life in a new country. The youngest two are enrolled in high school and are working hard! Our refugee clients have survived war, genocide, and long stays in refugee camps. They come to Chicago filled with the promise of a better life. Your generosity helped welcome this family to their new apartment and their new life.Thank you, Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program
