On Sunday, October 29th, Michael and Maddalena Flight received the Christifideles Award from Cardinal Cupich at Holy Name Cathedral. This award is bestowed upon an individual and couple who have demonstrated, by participation in parish life, the personal and ministerial renewal called for by the Papal Exhortation, Christifideles Laici, calling the laity to the vocation of responsibility for the Church’s Life springing from the gift of mission of their baptism.
Michael and Maddalena are a blessing to each other, their family, parish, and community. They have been married for 26 years and are the parents of 2 sons ages 20 and 18. Faithful Mass attendees, Michael and Maddalena became actively involved in parish life when their oldest son began pre-school at St. Mary in 1998. Maddalena has taught Religious Education classes for the past thirteen years at the 2nd, 4th and 7th grade levels; Michael has taught 7th graders for the past three years. Maddalena is an extraordinary Eucharistic minister and Lector; Michael is an usher – and both warmly greet people before and after Mass every week.
Maddalena served on the Religious Education Board for three years and currently serves on the Youth Steering Committee and is liaison to the Pastoral Council. They consistently encourage the youth of the parish to be involved, especially by reaching out and including them to participate at Mass – as Greeters, Lectors, and Ushers. They are regular volunteers at Our Lady of the Angels Mission and provide wonderful service opportunities with this outreach program to members of St. Mary, including the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, the summer block party and priest dinners. Michael is also actively involved with Sunshine Gospel Ministries.
Michael and Maddalena are truly a couple who live their faith together, are open and welcoming to all they encounter, and actively spread the teachings of the Gospels and the Church. Our parish is most fortunate to have this wonderful couple who so openly live their faith among us. Thank you for that beautiful witness and may God continue to bless you and your family!
